Metro Detroit Indian community mourns death of four men in crash with wrong-way driver

Members of Metro Detroit’s Indian community are mourning the loss of “four great friends” today who were killed in an auto accident Sunday.

According to the Detroit Telugu Association, Venkata Chalam Pasala, 30; Sumanth Rajana, 32; Satyendranath Akula, 35; and Rajendra Prasad Jonnala, 50, died from injuries suffered in the crash that occured at about 4 a.m. on the Lodge Freeway in Southfield.

"Today is a sad day for our community, as we mourn the loss of four great friends in a single fatal car accident,” reads a message on the association’s website. “Of the four, three are IT professionals and working for miracle software company. The fourth, Mr. Rajendra Prasad, is visiting his new born grand daughter.”

The state police say the four were hit head-on in their SUV by a wrong-way driver on Michigan-10 in Southfield early Sunday. The 23-year-old driver of the other vehicle also died in the crash.

Detroit Telugu Association President-elect Venkata Aekka says the four men had been visiting a Detroit casino.

According to the association, which is is made up of people who speak the Telugu dialect and are from the Andhra Pradesh state in India, all the victim's families live in Farmington Hills.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the families here and in India,” reads the message from the DTA Executive Committee.

According to Fox 2, police believe alcohol may have been a factor.

The Sunday morning accident added to an already deadly weekend on the freeways of Metro Detroit. In total, 12 people were reportedly killed in automobile accidents over the weekend.
