Obama names Indian-American Srikanth 'Sri' Srinivasan as US federal judge

Washington, June 12 (IANS) Chandigarh-born Indian-American legal liminary Srikanth 'Sri' Srinivasan has been nominated by President Barack Obama to what is "often called the nation's second-highest court", the US court of appeals for the American capital.

Srinivasan, 45, who in August last year was named principal deputy solicitor general of the US, succeeding another Indian American, Neal Kumar Katyal, creates history in becoming the first South Asian to be ever nominated to the circuit court. If confirmed, he will be just the third South Asian named to any federal judgeship.

Along with Srinivasan, the president also nominated Caitlin Halligan, to also serve on the same court.

Viswanathan Anand wins his fifth World Chess Championship title

This is Viswanathan Anand's fifth crown and fourth in a row and he a prize money of approximately $1.4 million as prize money. He has been the world champion since 2007. In the tie-breaker, Anand went ahead after winning the second game in 77 moves following a draw in the first in 33 moves. The remaining two games also ended in a draw for a result of 2.5-1.5 as Anand defended his world championship title for the third time in a row.

Lawrence Tech names new President: Virinder K. Moudgil

Lawrence Technological University named Virinder K. Moudgil as its new president today. Moudgil, who has served as provost and led academic affairs at Oakland University since 2001, will assume office July 1. He will be the seventh president at the 4,500-student private university, succeeding Lewis N. Walker. Walker has served in several Lawrence Tech leadership roles, including president since 2006, and has been named to a one-year term as the university’s chancellor beginning July 1.
